The History of Alki's Statue of Liberty

On the back of the statue base is a brief history of how the present statue and plaza arrived at this place and time.

This prophetic brick in the montage above was placed in the plaza during Phase 1 (long before the election) by an Alki Beach resident in the summer of 2008.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
--Margaret Mead

From a welcoming speech for Greg Johnson on September 19, 2009:

So easy to stand on a sunny day;

even summer rain is more like playing as the children do--

scampering up and about and through

the drops of water, wet and warm,

whether sprinklers or a summer storm.

But now we're adults, we are stern;

we always have so much to learn and, oh, so much to do.

We strive, we push, 'til we are through,

and all of that has brought us here

to celebrate and clap and cheer.

For truly, man has risen far,

we're cheering one for whom a star is closer now, a nearer light,

He worked to push beyond the night

and conquered fear and pain and worse,

to take us to the Universe.

I'm very proud that he is here,

I too will stand and clap and cheer for perserverance, courage too.

But, a tiny thought, a clue

about the man within me comes...

Up there, he also had some fun.

He got to soar where we just dream,

he slipped beyond that narrow seam that keeps us on the little ball

to lift and float above us all.

No matter how grown up we are

It's in the boy to touch a star.

For all of us who dream, Thank you, Greg.

Revitalization of Landscaping Continue at the Plaza

Seattle Parks and Recreation has agreed to replace a number of plantings at the Statue of Liberty Plaza. some of the original plantings, done for the Opening Dedication on Sept. 6, 2008, have not flourished. The Alki Community Council will be assisting by organizing volunteer work parties to assist with the plantings.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING, we will let ou know when a firm date has been set for this work. If you wish to assist with this project, please contact Eilene Hutchinson at 206-933-8352, or by email at libertyplaza@msn.com. You can also take a look at the new landscape plan here.

Alki Community Council Brick and Plaque Sale

The Alki Community Council, the organization that is assuming responsibility for assisting the Seattle Dept. of Parks and Recreation with the continuing maintainence of the Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza, has begun a sale of engraved Bricks and Plaques for the Plaza. There are only a limited number of bricks and plaques left.

Since the Alki Community Council is still in the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) statue with the IRS, donations for bricks and plaques are not tax-ductible at this time. All proceeds will be used for the maintainence of the plaza or for approved Alki Community Council sponsored community events that benefit the plaza and the community's enjoyment or involvement with the plaza.

Time Capsule Buried - Astronaut Honored

Saturday, September 19, 2009, Astronaut Gregory C. Johnson was the honored guest at the burial of the 50-year Time Capsule at the Statue of Liberty Plaza on Alki Beach. The festivities, which begin a 2 PM, were located on the plaza at the junction of Alki Avenue SW and SW 61st Avenue in West Seattle.

The Time Capsule was put together by the Log House Museum, the Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project, and members of the West Seattle community. In additional to honoring Captain Johnson, the celebration included burial of the capsule, a short address by Richard Conlin, Chair of the Seattle City Council, and Time Capsule Cake for everyone.

In addition, Captain Johnson received a Proclamation, presented by Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis, and signed by the Mayor and the entire City Council, naming September 19, 2009, as Gregory C. Johnson Day in Seattle. Captain Johnson grew up in West Seattle and graduated from West Seattle High School in 1972.

SSLPP Final Event

It is also the final event that will be sponsored by the Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project. The project was begun in 2007 by Libby and Paul Carr, as Co-chairs of a new committee, to continue the efforts of prior groups to renovate the statue and create a new plaza. As can be seen below, this involved much more than just replacing the old statue with a new one, but was the culmination of the efforts of many people in the community over a number of years.
old plaza new plaza
This was the old statue on the old base prior to Sept 6, 2008. This is the beautiful, new plaza as it stands today. Thank you, all.

Although the SSLPP will cease to operate, the remainder of the money raised by that committee and not spent completing Phase 2 will be administered for the maintenance of the plaza through a Memorandum of Agreement now being finalized by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation and the Alki Community Council. For more information, please contact members of the the Alki Community Council or paul@carrbiz.com.

The 2nd phase of the project resulted in the placement of 852 newly inscribed bricks and 8 plaques in the plaza. Because the plaques and inscribed bricks must fit within the original nautilaus design of the project, there are only slightly over 200 bricks and seven plaques left to be placed at a future date. It is anticipated that the Alki Community Council may sell these bricks and plaques in the future, for those interested.

The Sealady Newsletter

The Sealady Newsletter will continue for a while, as will this website, to keep the community current on the final disposition of collected funds, events at the statue, and any other items of interest relavent to the plaza. If you have comments, concerns, or questions, please address them to Paul and Libby Carr.

"As the originators and Co-Chairs of the Seattle Statue of Liberty Project, it was our pleasure to watch as many people came together so quickly, not once but twice, to accomplish a goal many people wanted for a long time. Our small Statue of Liberty is just 1/18th the size of the original in New York Harbor, but for many of us here it represents hope, faith, and love of and in this country as no other symbol can do.

"The SSLPP was never meant to be a permanent organization—we were just trying to raise sufficient funds to complete this project—so it is a great pleasure to know that the Alki Community Council, a group that has represented so many people in this area in the past, will be carrying on to oversee maintenance of this beautiful project. Thank you all, and God Bless You."
